Covered Bridges

This week was all about covered bridges. Lancaster county is home to 29 covered bridges, the most of any county in Pennsylvania. 20 of those 29 county bridges are still open to traffic. Since most of the bridges were built in the 1800’s, many of them have been reconstructed in the last couple of years to help preserve the pieces of history. Most recently, the Siegrist‘s Mill Covered Bridge (pictured above) was rebuilt and also raised a few feet in 2012 due to some damaged caused by Hurricane Lee in September of 2011. Some officials in charge of the preservation of the bridges have even gone as far as putting up steel steel beams in front of both sides of the Schenck’s Mill Bridge in an effort to keep trucks from running into the bridge. It is becoming increasingly clear that people are willing to do whatever it takes to help keep these historic bridges around for many years to come.
